Balance and Fall Prevention

The number one cause of death in senior citizens is from the result of a fall. Every 29 minutes, a senior citizen dies from the result of a fall. Falls, loss of balance, unsteady gait are all areas of concern for every patient that comes in through our office. Balance assessments are routinely performed to identify the patient's fall risk if any. Patients can have numbness in extremities, postural dysfunction with altered center of gravity, decrease flexibility and strength, or a multitude of other issues that can disrupt balance and increase a patient's risk of falling. No longer do we dismiss instability because of age, rather we seek out the reason for the instability through objective testing and implement appropriate activities and exercises to mitigate the fall risk.
